I find this news especially poisonous, because the Spanish Governement has always tried to mix together the Scottish and Catalan referendums with the clear intention to create confusion. We have to remember that Spanish newspapers reported the attempt from the Spanish Embassy in London to stop the referendum in Scotland.

But between Catalonia and Scotland there is a difference of some magnitude. While the Scottish referendum is legal as it responds to a pact between London and Edinburgh, an eventual inquiry on self-determination in Catalunya would be illegal because the Spanish Constitution, which speaks of the "indissoluble unity" of the nation and states that national sovereignty resides with the Spanish people, does not allow it.
Una vez que el Congreso de los Diputados y el Tribunal Constitucional han dejado claro que Catalunya no puede organizar una consulta de autodeterminación al tratarse de un asunto que compete al conjunto de los españoles, el Gobierno cree que el presidente de la Generalitat, Artur Mas, "no puede seguir adelante".
Once the Congress of Deputies and the Constitutional Court have made it clear that Catalonia can not organize a consultation of self-determination as it is a matter for the whole of the Spain, the Government believes that the president of the Generalitat, Artur Mas, "can not go ahead".
