A few months ago, a friend in the USA asked what she could do to help the cause of Scottish independence. "Nothing much," was my reply, before going on to explain that this is a debate that has to be held within Scotland. However that is not the view of the UK Government, despite Cameron's protestations that he cannae debate Alex Salmond because he doesn't have a vote in September. But it turns out that there is something she can do after all.

Vor ein paar Monaten hat mich eine Freundin aus den USA gefragt, was sie tun kann um dem Bemuehen um Schottische Unabhaengigkeit zu helfen. “Nicht viel”, war meine Antwort, bevor ich ihr erklaert habe, dass dieses Anliegen innerhalb Schottlands geklaert werden muss. Das ist jedoch nicht die Meinung der Britischen Regierung, obwohl Cameron protestiert, dass er nicht mit Alex Salmond verhandeln kann, weil er im September nicht waehlen darf. So hat es sich also ergeben, dass meine Freundin doch helfen kann.

In January, the Sunday Herald published the news that the UK Foreign Office is heading a campaign to enlist support for Better Together in foreign countries. Im Januar hatte der Sunday Herald einen Artikel veroeffentlicht, in dem berichtet wurde, dass das Britische Aussenamt im Ausland Werbeung fuer eine “Besser zusammen” Kampange fuehrt. William Hague, der Britische Aussenminister, moechte damit also erfahrem, welche negativen Dinge das Ausland zur Schottischen Unabhaengigkeit zu sagen hat. Laut Sunday Herald hat das Aussenamt die Regierungen von China, Russland, Newseeland, Australien, Kanada und die 28 Mitgliedsstaaten der EU kontaktiert, in der verzweifelten Suche nach Gruenden gegen das schottische Streben nach Unabhaengigkeit.

The Foreign Office has set up a "Devolution Unit" to co-ordinate their campaign. UK Embassies, High Commissions, and Consulates around the globe have received instructions to pass on any communications from individuals, organisations and businesses about Scottish independence. However, since of course the civil service is supposed to be politically neutral, the UK Government can't come out and admit openly what you know, I know and the dug knows they're up to. They must maintain a veneer of neutrality.

Das Aussenamt hat eine Dezentralisierungseinheit erstellt, um ihre Kampange zu koordinieren. Britische Botschaften, Hochkommissariate und Konsulate ueberall auf der Welt haben Anweisungen erhalten, alle Kommunikationen von Einzelpersonen, Organisationen und Betrieben zum Thema Schottische Unabhaengigkeit weiterzuleiten. Jedoch kann die Britsche Regierung nicht zugeben, dass sie weiss, das ich und viele andere wissen, was hier gespielt wird, da der oeffentliche Dienst politisch neutral sein soll. Die Regierung muss somit eine neutral Fassade bewaren.

But two can play at that gemme. So if you are a Scot abroad, or a citizen of another country who sympathises with Scottish independence, write a formal letter to the UK Embassy or High Commission in your country. What you tell them is of course up to you, but something along the lines of expressing your disgust that the British Government is actively seeking foreign intervention in order to prevent Scottish independence wouldn't go amiss. And there was you as a person in furren pairts extolling the Mother of Parliaments and the rigorously democratic system in the UK.  
 

Dieses Spiel koennen wir aber auch spielen. Wenn du ein Schotte im Ausland bist oder ein Staatsbuerger eines anderen Landes, das mit schottischer Unabhaengigkeit sympathisiert, schicke einen offiziellen Brief zur Britischen Botschaft oder das Hochkommissariat deines Landes. Was in diesm Brief steht ist natuerlich deine Wahl, aber eine Kritik daran, dass die Britische Regierung Hilfe aus dem Ausland sucht, um Schottlands Unabhaengigkeit zu verhindern, wuerde nicht schaden.

You could point out to them that it's now impossible for you to present the UK as a model to follow, when its government is engaging in underhand tactics to influence a democratic debate, and these tactics are creating significant and lasting damage to the UK's image and standing in your country. Make sure you point out that you have sent a copy of your letter to your member of Parliament, senator, congressman or diputado, asking them whether they support your view that Scotland should be allowed to debate its future without foreign interference, and requesting that they condemn the actions of the UK Government.

Du koenntest erwaehnen, dass es fuer dich nun unmoeglich ist, das Vereinigte Koenigreich als Vorzeigebeispiel zu sehen, wenn es solche heimtueckischen Versuche startet, eine demokratische Verhandlung zu beeinflussen, und somit das Ansehen von Grossbritannien langfristig schadet. Stell ‘ klar, dass du Kopien dieses Briefes an Abgeordnete oder Senatoren schickst und sie darin fragst, ob sie deiner Meinung sind, dass Schottland das Recht hat, ueber seine Zukunft ohne fremde Einmischung zu entscheiden.

However since the UK Government is actively seeking the opinions of foreign citizens and foreign residents, it is only right and proper that you give them your opinion too. Tell them why you think Scottish independence is good for Scotland, good for the rest of the UK and will likewise be good for your country. If you can, get as many people as possible to sign your letter before posting it off to the British Embassy or High Commission. Even better, if you are a member of a club, group, or association, speak to other members and get their consent to send a letter on official headed notepaper.

Seit die Britische Regierung jedoch die Meinung auslaendischer Buerger hoeren moechte, ist es nur gerecht wenn du deine auch gibts. Erlautere, warum du denkst, dass Unabhaengigkeit gut fuer Schottland, das Vereinigte Koenigreich und dein eigenes Land ist. Wenn moeglich versuche soviele Unterschriften wie moeglich zu bekommen bevor du den Brief abschickst. Es waere sogar noch besser, wenn du Mitglied eines Clubs, einer Gruppe oder Gemeinschaft bist und deren Einverstaendnis bekommst in ihrem Namen zu schreiben.

If you are a business person, a letter on company headed notepaper saying that you believe that an independent Scotland would be a better investment opportunity for your company would be just fine and dandy.

Wenn du eine Firma hast, schreibe auf offiziellem Firmenpapier, dass du glaubst, dass ein unabhaengiges Schottland eine bessere Investitionsmoeglichkeit fuer deinen Betrieb ist.

Insist on a reply, tell them that you expect your letter to be forwarded to the Foreign Office's devolution unit - and also tell them that you've copied the letter to your local newspaper.

If David Cameron can use UK diplomatic staff to engage in politicking, then so can we. This is not a campaign organised or inspired by the Scottish Government, the SNP, or Yes Scotland. It will be co-ordinated by me, Paul Kavanagh, and Pilar Fernandez from Galicia. We are not members of the SNP or any other political party whether in Scotland or elsewhere, and we were not put up to this by Alicsammin. We are doing this on our own initiative and no one is paying us to do it. Though if this wee campaign takes off, that probably won't stop the UK media from claiming otherwise.

Wenn David Cameron britische Diplomaten fuer politische Tricks benutzen kann koennen wir das auch. Das ist keine von der schottischen Regierung, SNP oder YES Scotland organisierte oder beeinflusste Kampange. Es wird von mir, Paul Kavanagh, und Pilar Fernandez aus Galicien koordiniert. Wir sind keine SNP Mitglieder und gehoeren keiner anderen Partei an, weder in Schottland noch anderswo. Und wir haben nichts mit Alex Salmond zu tun. Es ist unsere eigene Initiative und niemand bezahlt uns dafuer. Aber falls diese kleine Kampange funktioniert wird die Britische Presse das warscheinlich ignorieren.

We will collate all the replies, and will publish the anonymised statistics closer to the vote. We would also like to publish extracts from selected letters. If you do not want your name, or the name of your company or organisation, to be published, please let me know in the email. Scots in Scotland will then know that we do have friends and allies abroad, and with a bit of luck, the negative responses received by Cameron and Hague's "Devolution Unit" will be swamped by the positive ones.

Wir werden alle Antworten sammeln und annonyme Statistiken kurz vor der Wahl veroeffentlichen. Ausserdem wuerden wir gerne Ausschnitte aus Briefen veroeffentlichen. Wenn dein Name oder deine Firma nicht veroeffentlicht werden sollen, lass’ es uns bitte per email wissen. Buerger in Schottland werden dann wissen, dass sie Freunde im Ausland haben, und mit ein bisschen Glueck werden die von Cameron and Hague organisierten negativen Antworten von positiven ueberwaeltigt.
